UPDATE: Kurt Busch won the 59th Annual Daytona 500. Chase Elliott finished 14th after running out of fuel as the race reached its conclusion. However, this was a significant improvement from his 2016 finish of 37th.

Last year, Chase Elliott was a rookie running in the Daytona 500 in Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet NAPA car No. 24. He started the race in the pole position. Well, he’s done it again. With a qualifying lap of 192.872 mph, Elliott has the pole position the second year in a row.

Last year, he finished 37th. This year, he’s planning to finish a lot higher in the 59th edition of the Daytona 500 scheduled for tomorrow.

Last year’s winner was Denny Hamlin who led for 95 of the 200 laps. Martin Truex Jr. finished second. It was Hamlin’s first Daytona 500 victory. The 2016 Daytona 500 win was Hamlin’s 27th Sprint Cup victory.

Elliott has four pole positions, including this year’s Daytona 500, and had 10 top-5 places in his rookie season. He also had 17 top-10s. He was the 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year and was 10th in driver standings when the 2016 Sprint Cup ended.

This year, he enters the Daytona 500, and the Sprint Cup Series, with a new paint job on his NAPA Chevrolet.

Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott, is a NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee and the Winston Cup Champion in 1988 (2003 was the last year for the Winston Cup and it was the Nextel Cup Series until Sprint took over sponsorship in 2008).

Elliott has demonstrated that he knows how to win even before he reached the Big Show. In 2014, he won NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. At 18, he was the youngest driver to ever win what many call NASCAR’s minor league of racing. That year, he won the trifecta – the Driver’s Championship Title, Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Driver awards.
