“Automotive air filters are overrated.” That makes as much sense as the airplane mechanic who says, “Wings are overrated.” Without those wings, that plane isn’t going to get off the ground. Unfortunately, you can drive without an air filter on your car, or with a very dirty air filter on your car. Either situation is not preferable.

The air filter filters the air that mixes with gasoline as it enters the engine cylinders. Adding particles of dust or debris reduce the efficiency of the air-fuel mixture when it burns. In that way, a dirty mix of air and fuel is inefficient and reduces the performance of the engine.

Additionally, when the fuel burns dirty, as is the case with a dirty mix of air and fuel, it leaves additional residue in the cylinder and the exhaust system, from the exhaust valves on out. That residue can add wear to the cylinder walls and clog the catalytic converter quicker. A catalytic converter is not an inexpensive piece of equipment. Extending its life is one way to reduce the maintenance costs of your vehicle.

Another problem, when the air filter is full of dirt is that it restricts the flow of air, too. This affects the proportions of the air-fuel mix going into the engine. Your car is designed to operate with an optimal mix of air and fuel. When it runs rich, as is the case when there is a higher proportion of fuel to air, it burns dirtier. Once again, this is bad for the cylinders and the exhaust system. It will also foul the spark plugs sooner.

The air filter is a relatively inexpensive part. But, as we have seen, it plays an important role in the operation of your car’s engine. How often should you replace your air filter? Your car’s owner’s manual will give you a rough idea. However, it also depends on where you drive.

If you go through construction zones often, some of the dust kicked up by the road work will find its way into your air filter. In the process, the air filter will clog faster.

The other way to tell if you need a new air filter is to do a visual inspection. You hold the filter up to the light and, depending on how much light gets through, you can determine if it’s time to replace the filter. Here, experience is helpful. A qualified auto repair technician will generally inspect your car’s air filter at no cost. Assuming you can trust them not to try selling you an air filter you don’t need, they’ll let you know how your air filter is doing.
