Daytona 500 Trivia Quiz Answer Sheet

With the Daytona 500 Sunday, last week, this blog ran a trivia quiz about the race and NASCAR. Those who answered the questions correctly, after sending their answers to rich@richpublicity.com, were entered in a contest for a free oil change at Performance Unlimited or, if they’re not in the McHenry County area, Rich Publicity would send them a consolation $5 gift card to use at a Panera Bread store anywhere.

Below, we have repeated the questions, though, this time, with their answers. If you didn’t have a chance to enter the contest, you can still see how you did.

2. How long did the race last and why? 3 days – it took that long for NASCAR officials to study a photo of the finish and pick Petty as the winner over Johnny Beauchamp.

3. How long did it take for Lee Petty’s son, Richard, to win his first Daytona 500? Five years: Richard Petty won the 1964 Daytona 500.

4. Who has won the most Daytona 500 races and how many times? Richard Petty has won 7 Dayton 500 races.

6. What is the Daytona 500 trophy called? The Harley J. Earl Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Daytona 500. Earl was a GM car designer and the second commissioner of NASCAR.

7. What is the name of the trophy awarded to the crew chief of the winning car in the Daytona 500? The crew chief of the winning car receives the Cannonball Baker Trophy. Baker was an auto and motorcycle racer who lived from 1882 to 1960 and, during that time, set 143 driving records.

8. Has the president of the United States ever served as the Grand Marshal for the Daytona 500? If so, who and when? In 2004, George W Bush was the Grand Marshal for the Daytona 500. His father was also the Grand Marshal for the race but that was in 1978 before he was president.

9. Who won the pole position for this year’s Daytona 500? Chase Elliott, driving the Napa Auto Parts car No. 24, won the pole position in this year’s Daytona 500. This is also Elliott’s first Daytona 500.

10. What year was NASCAR founded? 1947

11. How many NASCAR-sanctioned races are there this year? There are more than 1,200 NASCAR sanctioned races in 30 states, Mexico, Canada and Europe.

12. What is the top prize in NASCAR each year and who won it last year? The Sprint Cup is the top prize in NASCAR and is based on points earned by racers in NASCAR races throughout the year. Last year, 2015, Kyle Busch was the Sprint Cup winner.
