Some people say that having an auto repair shop they can trust is almost as important as having a family doctor they can trust. If you could tell the difference by driving past an auto repair shop, that would be great. But, you may want to investigate auto repair shops before you choose one as yours.

Having one auto repair shop you trust, where you always bring your car, truck or SUV for repairs and service is a very good idea. The auto repair technicians at the auto repair shop will get used to your car. They’ll have a solid idea of the condition of your vehicle. And, in the process, you’ll develop a relationship with the auto repair shop where you’ll have confidence that they’ll take care of you and your car, truck or SUV if you ever have any issues.

First, however, you want to choose the right auto repair shop to develop a relationship with. In doing so, you’ll want to ask several questions. You’ll want to know the answers to the following questions:

• Are the auto repair technicians certified?
• How up-to-date is their equipment?
• What is their warranty policy – do they stand behind their work?
• Are estimates free and, if not, what is the cost?
• Do they provide a shuttle service?
• Do they offer a loaner vehicle?
• Will they notify you when your car is due for service?
• Will they work on your vehicle – are they experienced with your car, truck or SUV?

There may be other questions you want to ask. These, above, however, are a good start.

When asking about the certifications of their auto repair technicians, you may also want to ask how frequently the auto repair technicians take additional training. You may also find a shop where they swear by the ‘old’ auto-repair equipment. That may sound quaint but it’s not something you want to hear. Newer cars really require the newer equipment to properly service your vehicle.

As for estimates – they really should provide them free of charge. If they do charge you, that should be a definite check in the negative column.

Some auto repair shops use computer databases that allow them to keep track of when your vehicle is due for service. When your car, truck or SUV is due, they’ll send you a notice or give you a call.
